City Council Special Meeting: There will be a special City Council meeting today at 2 p.m. During the meeting, City Manager Dave Sykes will provide an update on the City’s response to COVID-19 during Item 3.1, Report of the City Manager. Consistent with the California Governor’s Executive Order No. N-29-20, City of San Jose Resolution No. 79450, and the Santa Clara County Health Officer’s Shelter in Place Order, the meeting will not be physically open to the public and the City Council will be teleconferencing from remote locations. Dog Parks, Sport Fields, and Park Amenity Closures: Effective immediately, all dog parks; tennis, pickle ball, futsal, and basketball courts; outdoor gym equipment and playgrounds; picnic and barbecue areas; drinking fountains; restrooms; disc golf areas and sport fields are closed in accordance with the new County of Santa Clara Public Health Order issued on March 31. Parks and trails remain open, however, they will close if they become overcrowded or if visitors do not follow County and State guidance and orders which include practicing physical distancing of at least six feet. Temporary Shelter at Parkside Hall: The City of San José Housing Department has established a 75-bed temporary homeless shelter at Parkside Hall to help keep our unhoused neighbors safe during the COVID-19 crisis. This shelter will begin accepting individuals today, April 1, by referral only from the Santa Clara County Office of Supportive Housing and the Valley Homeless Healthcare Program. This is not a walk-in shelter. The purpose of this temporary shelter is to protect unhoused residents from the pandemic and slow the spread of COVID-19. The shelter is set up to comply with physical distancing guidelines and is operated by the nonprofit HomeFirst.
Census Day: April 1 is Census Day. Today, the U.S. Census Bureau asks the nation to respond to the 2020 Census online (my2020census.gov), by phone (844-330-2020) or by mail. The City is encouraging every resident to complete the 2020 Census and count every person living or sleeping in their home, including children, roommates, and friends. The Census takes 10 minutes to complete and does not include questions about citizenship or immigration status. By law, the U.S. Census Bureau cannot share information collected with federal, state, or local government agencies. For every person counted, we will receive essential federal funds for services like schools, fire departments, hospitals, and health centers in our community for the next 10 years. Online census and phone support is available in English and 12 other languages, including Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Tagalog, and Chinese.
